By the time children are in the second and third grade they are starting to read chapter books.  This is the next step up from picture books and simple stories.  Phyllis J. Perry worked in the elementary school for more than thirty eight years as a teacher and administrator.  She has written over forty five books and one of them is "The Secrets of the Rock" from the "A Fribble Mouse Library Mystery" series.

All the characters in the book are mice and the main character is Fribble a third grader who goes to Twitch Elementary School in Cheddarville, WI.  It is a great book for learning something about doing research.             After a rockfalls and almost hits Friddle and his friends on the head they discover this is not just any old stone.  It is part of a marker honoring Ehrich Weiss/Harry Houdini and has a date of 1927 on it.  They start to investigate using different research areas such as the library, phone books newspaper and several other references.  Fribble's Aunt Squeegee comes to visit and helps he and his friends try to figure out the secret hidden in this rock.

There are several black and white drawings that illustrate the magical mystery in a delightful manner.  Children will love reading this mystery and how the friends work together to solve it.
